Pump Up the Volume

Volume, bubble-shapes, and cocoon silhouettes are nothing new, but they're becoming more mainstream with companies like Gap and J.Crew offering up basic styles of their own. While the mall brands have picked up on the sweatshirt and coat parts of this trend, the runways continue to evolve the trend by playing more with the proportions of the pieces, as well as adding skirts, pants, and dresses to the mix. Below, our favorite picks from the runways.

Isabel Marant

Jonathan Saunders

Summer 2015 trend prediction: Tie-backs

The mercury just dropped here in NYC and lots of people saw snow last night (!!!) but we're going to go ahead and report on this trend for Summer 2015 anyway!

Tie-back tops are already popping up here and there, and we're predicting the trend will catch on in a big way for SS15.

Fall 2015 Best-Of

While the major Spring 2015 fashion weeks are just barely wrapping up, it's hard to think about these styles when the weather here in NY is just starting to get crisp and ready for fall... And since fall is our favorite time of year, we're going to take this opportunity to look back at some of our favorites from the Fall 2014 RTW shows that took place earlier this year.

1. Most wearable: Adeam. We love everything about this; the feminine sihouette of the skirt done in a masculine fabrication, paired with a big trend for fall -- school girl blouses buttoned all the way to the top -- topped off and softened up with a fur jacket.

2. Best every day dress: Peter Jensen. We love this simple and classic silhouette with such a playful pattern that calls to mind Charlie Brown's iconic shirt.

3. Best going out outfit: Dion Lee. Fun and revealing without being too revealing.

4. Best alternative for a cocktail dress: Camilla and Marc

5. Best gown: While caftans were huge for summer, we still love them going into fall, especially with this luxe fabrication and rich color.

6. Best top: A.W.A.K.E. The color, the fabric, the fit, and the feathers. It's all perfection.

7. Best sweater: Barbara Bui. The over-sized cable knit and exaggerated proportions make this preppy staple fun, relevant, and modern.

8. Best pants: Jonathan Simkhai. Just such a great silhouette overall.

9. Best skirt: Rebecca Taylor. This quilted zip up mini is basically the epitome of this season.

10. Best outerwear: Agnona. The wave motif, black and navy combo, and oversized proportions are all big trends for fall.

Micro Trend: Graphic Shirt Dresses

Micro Trend: A Sprinkling of Roses

Sometimes we notice trends that are specific to a look or silhouette -- in this case, flower appliques on dresses and formal wear. Since we're not seeing it in many other places, we're calling it a "micro trend", and keeping an eye on it to see if it expands to other places.

Glitchy Pop is Alive and Well in Brooklyn

Life Size Maps just released a new track before some upcoming spring shows around the city and we are a big fan of this digitized, happy pop music.

The Brooklyn-based dude trio has been making the rounds in our beloved music enclaves in the borough and can't wait to hear some more of their warm weather-ready set lists.

Bed Stuy Artist With a Message for Cat Callers Resurfaces

Last year, we started noticing a few pastings on empty walls around Bed Stuy, Brooklyn.

In addition to the graffiti and art pieces that make the neighborhood so much fun to visit (and live in), these drawings stood out. Stark and minimalistic in nature, beautifully-realistic women stared out as you walked by with different messages in bold letters underneath.

Stop Telling Women to Smile. Women Don't Owe You Their Time or Conversation.

Powerful words with a very personal message you could feel jumping out from the black and white drawings.

We did some digging and found out the artist responsible is Tatyana Fazlalizadeh, a painter and muralist from Philadelphia. She started the project after moving to Brooklyn and constantly feeling uncomfortable walking down the street because of the barrage of verbal harassment that would follow her.

The Crossover

A similar but cleaner version of the "All Wrapped Up" trend is "The Crossover." With these silhouettes, the wrap is much more tailored. This trend evolved out of last summer's cutout trend, but is updated for Summer 2014.

All Wrapped Up

One of the bigger trends we saw on the Spring 2014 runways was silhouettes that include wraps, knots, and twists. We love this new take on draping and think we'll see this peak for early summer, then continue through Fall 2014 as well.

That 70s Show

Among the myriad of trends we saw in the Spring 2014 shows, was an emerging trend of early 70's inspired looks.

This trend isn't particularly huge just yet, but we think it'll pick up a bit once the weather gets warmer.

New Album from Brooklyn's Hospitality

We first heard Brooklyn-based Hospitality last year at the Bowery Ballroom. The crowd there was unusually diverse for the venue and extremely smitten with the trio's warm, heartfelt pop, with a little lo-fi garage thrown in for good measure. Say it's a little of The Decemberists meets the Violent Femmes.

Hospitality obviously won over the hearts of our city, and the critics, with their first LP. Now, with their second full-length album, Trouble, Amber Pampini's soulful, airy voice is accompanied by more comfortable pop, but this time with a little bite.

2014 Brooklyn Trends About to Hit the Rest of the World

Well, they should, because whether or not New York City is the center of the universe, our borough is the brainchild and birthplace of many of the country's trends.

From Swedish clogs making it back into haute fashion, to 90s nostalgia and #longhairdontcare, lets take a look at what was big in 2013 and what The Drift thinks will be the big trends in Brooklyn in 2104.

Black Magic Desert Gypsy
Have you walked down Grand Ave. in Williamsburg recently and seen a girl—or several—looking like a cross between a gypsy and a witch, with some Navajo thrown in for good measure?

There's a reason for that, and dressing like Stevie Nicks is just the tip of the iceberg with this trend. From succulents, to kilim rugs and turquoise jewelry everything, this hybrid of southwest aesthetics and dark magic is now being seen in middle America and West Elm, thanks to Instagram and Pinterest. Get your pentagrams out from middle school and start rocking them again.

While most people think of the new year as an opportunity to get organized, when it comes to fashion, this idea has flown out the window. We'll get more in depth with each of these trends later on this year, but for now, check out our list of top ten trend predictions (in no particular order) for 2014.

Best Looks from the 2014 Golden Globes Red Carpet

There were so many incredible gowns on tonight's red carpet, that it was tough picking our faves. We ended up picking fifteen looks we felt were either new/fresh ideas OR were such great/flattering choices for the ladies wearing them that they had to be included on the list.
