Like Movies, But Need to Pay the Rent? New York Is Here for You With Free Outdoor Movies This Summer!

Courtesy of 80%20
Who doesn't like free stuff? And outdoor movies that are free are the best! This summer 2013, take some from the city that we all love, but comes with too many taxes and high rents that leave little room for entertainment.

Swim Trend: Rash Guards

Rash guards have always been a staple for surfers, but in recent years, top-name designers have noticed a resurgence of women in the sport and gotten in on the act as well. As casual surfers in high school with hand-me-down [men's!] rash guards, we would've had major envy of anyone with these tops (or that retro-chic one piece from Seea!)

Check out more uber-stylish guards after the jump, as well as the rest of our swim trends and endless summer coverage. We'll see you next week for our flower power trend picks!

Summer Jams Continue With the All-Girl HAIM

Our fair city has been overcast and humid the past couple of days. And, although summer is supposed to be here, we need some poppy, happy music to make get us through the day today.

Swim Trend: Vintage Look

With only a few days left of our endless summer/beach/rockaways coverage, we're winding down our swimwear trend reports. Today's key trend is based on vintage styling and silhouettes, with modern fabrics and updates to each cut.

We especially love this trend that gives a sexy nod to pinup girls while still maintaining a generous amount of coverage. Check out the rest of our picks after the jump!

Surf and Sun and All Things Fun at the Rockaways This Memorial Day Weekend!

Memorial Day is here and we want to be at the Rockaways!

Swim Trend: Cutouts and Lattice

You already know all about the trend of cutouts in clothing (and an example of how it's affected music with "glitches"), so it'll come as no surprise that this major trend has spilled over into swimwear. Some of the styles are very directly influenced by cutouts, yet others have been translated into lattice work or ladder backs.

While we're slightly dubious of the interesting tan lines you'll receive, we think these styles will be worth it; besides, SPF1000 guys!

Check out the rest of our swim trends for 2013 here.

Rockaway Taco Is Up and Running Again

The Rockaways and the boardwalk are synonymous with North Brooklyn kids and summer.

And the one place that feeds all of us hungry souls after sunning, beaching and drinking in the seen and be seen part of the Rockaways is Rockaway Taco.

After opening in 2008, this taqueria is the go-to for all of us who take the trains down on the weekends to surf and beach. But, after Hurricane Sandy devastated the Roackaways and other coastal regions in the area, those cool kids came down to help, partnering with the Rockaway Taco owners to help the neighborhoods who needed supplies, food and continuing help.

Swim Trend: Animal Print

For swim 2013, we're seeing a lot of the same trends that are also affecting clothing, including animal prints. There's no shortage of styles featuring animal prints, but some definitely stand out more than others.

Check out our top picks below, then check back every day this week for the rest of our swim trend coverage.

Memorial Day Weekend Means Surfing Season in the Rockaways

Surfer guys, micheladas and tan lines from your backpack only mean one thing... you're biking down to the Rockaways this weekend—and almost every weekend after—to soak up the rays and support our amazing business owners rallying hard after Hurricane Sandy nearly eight months ago.

One way to get you ready to beach it is some lo-fi surfer rock, preferably of the Australian persuasion. Well, we've got you covered with Dune Rats.

After two well-received EPs released in 2011 and a single in 2012, the feel-good, high times surfer rock group performed shows at SXSW, only making their next release even more anticipated.

Danny Beusa and BC Michaels released a new EP called Smile on their home turf in Brisbane a couple weeks ago and will hopefully be performing it sometime soon stateside.

In the meantime, kick back, chill out and finish that Michelada!

Summer and the City; Your Calendar for the Best Outdoor Concerts and Events in NYC

Summer in the city is both a wonderful (rooftop parties, garden bbqs, governor's island) and terrible (melting-hot subways, cooking garbage, sticky nights) place to be. Personally, we're big fans of summertime, and what NYC resident wouldn't be after suffering through loooong months of slush puddles, freezing temps, and barely any daylight?

To help you make the most of this magical time that is "summer in the city", we've planned a calendar of some of the best concerts and events coming up in the next few months.

Bookmark this page and enjoy, but don't forget the sunscreen!

Fight the System Deliciously... Try These New York DIY Eats

Courtesy of thewanderingeater.com
Pop-up and DIY underground restaurants are all the rage in New York and there's little wonder why.

With the majority of these small, homegrown storefronts and chefs based in Brooklyn, the draw of limited open hours, pop-up schedules and the cool resulting Instagram pictures bring the see and be seen kids in droves.

The Drift will keep an eye on the must-visit pop-up kitchens around the city this summer. And based on last summer, there will be a lot to choose from.

For now, in the spirit of Punk Week at The Drift, discover these DIY kitchens and discover your inner "f*ck the man" spirit, even when eating.

1. SCRATCHbread.
Lauded by Gothamist and other foodie blogs, this neighborhood favorite in Bed-stuy is a must visit
for anyone who likes breakfast food, crusty bread and good coffee. Limited hours and the weekend
brunch crowd make for long lines at the walk-up storefront at Lexington and Bedford in Brooklyn.

Punk's Not Dead: In Stores Now

Historically, the punk lifestyle was never associated with wealth or high price tags. Keeping in this spirit, we sifted through the goods at some of the most affordable clothing stores, to find the best offerings for the cheapest prices.

Punk Music Isn't Dead.... But It's Different

When the punk movement started in the 1970s, it was the perfect time for something loud and dangerous after so many years of wholesome rock, the summer(s) of love and the disgruntled youth that came after the changing times of the late 50s and 1960s.

London and New York especially had underground scenes that were tired of disco and the excess of both music and "the man." Punk rock, as well as garage and later more hardcore groups like The Misfits, all started in the DIY basements and lofts of New York and London.

With the Met's new exhibit and fashion trends getting inspiration from 90s grunge and 80s punk rock, there is ample opportunity to walk the walk, even if you aren't ready to remodel you bathroom like this.

Brooklyn can credit its fantastic DIY spaces (like Death by Audio and 285 Kent) to the founders of the anti-label scene. And although punk rock and everything that has evolved afterwards is hard to find, there are still great rock groups, and non-rock groups, with a message to listen to.

But for now, let's listen to and go nuts for the originals.

Punk's Not Dead!

More than a smattering of designers showed looks influenced by punk at the FW13 shows. In looks ranging from direct interpretations to subtle influences, we've pulled together a sample of what we saw.

Leather and Bondage

Subtler Influences
(Cheap Monday, Christopher Kane, 3.1 Phillip Lim, Fendi, and ALC)

Studded shoes, bags and jewelry are nothing new, but the accessories from the FW13 shows take a decided step towards bondage with straps, harnesses, and collars.
