Sometimes we feel nostalgic for past eras, even though they are far away and probably not as romantic as we think they were. Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris beautifully captured that melancholy and made a point that every generation pines for a period of time that ended before their time.
With the Great Gatsby opening this week, 1920s nostalgia is heavy, with food, booze and clothes trends harkening back to that great Jazz Age. And although Prohibition perhaps aided in the alcoholism and debauchery of that decade, and women's rights was just starting with a very long road to travel, the carefree, decadent perception we have of Fitzgerald's world is what we remember.
Music is a strong memory aid and can change the mood and environment of the listener faster than almost any other sensory experience.
In homage to the nostalgia of yesterday, we recommend listening to Sean Nicholas Savage this week.
A talented singer and songwriter under the Montreal-based Arbutus Records, Savage has been performing in his native Canada for years. In 2011, he released three full albums and is known for his unique solo performances at parties and clubs in Montreal.
His songs are comfortable, layered and thoughtful. The lyrics can sometimes be close to Andrew Bird-esque mystique, but still accessible.
